Basics
Full Name: Sibyll Patricia Trelawney
Played By: Emma Thompson
Birthdate: May 13, 1949
Blood: Pure.
Physical Description:
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 120 lbs.
Hair Color: Dark, mousy blonde
Eye Color: Blue-ish
First Impression: Sibyll Trelawney is a tall, thin, spindly-looking woman. She drapes herself ever in shawls and is adorned with much jewelry. These things, combined with her large glasses, very much give her a bug-like appearance...perhaps that of a praying mantis?
Hogwarts Specific:
House: Hufflepuff
Wand: 16", swishy, Hawthorn, Unicorn tail hair
Pet: None - Trelawney is well-equipped even to take care of herself, much less a pet!
Personality: (200 words min) Professor Sibyll Trelawney comes across as an unintelligent fluff-ball who walks around with her head constantly in the clouds. In her mind, there is a “deeper” explanation for every occurrence…nothing ever just “exists” as it is. She fancies herself a talented Seer like her great-great-grandmother, but the fact of the matter is, though she has made a few actual predictions, nobody can actually know what goes on inside her head when she’s supposedly focusing on her “Sight.” Perhaps she’s fascinated by the dust bunnies roaming around in there?
Trelawney thrives on drama. She thoroughly enjoys attempting to get people riled up with her “predictions” of death and destruction. Unfortunately, apparently unnoticed by her, she tends instead to cause a lot of snickering behind her back. Students and teachers alike see her as a total fraud.
Sibyll Trelawney is great at twisting facts, as well, to suit her purposes. In order to lend credence to her “predictions” she goes to great lengths to make the events fit retroactively…as in when she predicted, long ago to a student that what she (the student) was dreading would happen on a certain date…a date on which the student’s beloved pet died. One Hermione Granger, however, pointed out the fallacy in this “prediction” as it correlated to the death.
However. Sibyll Trelawney may not be as witless as she seems. While she is, in general, a failure as a Seer, she has proven herself to be quite adept at manipulation tactics. Those around her just may well be smart to not completely write her off as a loon…underestimation can have grave consequences.

Family History: (200 word min) Born May 13, 1949, Sibyll Patricia Trelawney is the daughter of Brighton and Elwyn Trelawney. Her great-great-grandmother was the famous Seer Cassandra Trelawney. Sibyll had no siblings, and it should be noted that her parents had long been estranged from their own families by the time Sibyll came along. Her aunts, uncles, and grandparents found Brighton and Elwyn entirely TOO superstitious for their liking, and thought the couple too obsessed with trying to force the gift of “Sight.” So Sybill never knew her extended family. Her eccentric behavior, then, was obviously a result of her parents’ idiosyncracies.
Sibyll was raised her entire life on a small farm in Exeter. She was schooled by her parents until the age of 11 at which time she entered Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
From the very moment she arrived, she was considered a very odd girl, and her schoolmates tended to avoid her at all costs – nobody likes constantly being told that they’re going to die a gruesome death. This suited Sibyll just fine, however, as she preferred solitude…she had always been taught (and to this day carries the belief) that being exposed to the auras of too many “ungifted” people would cloud her Inner Eye.
Thus her years at Hogwarts passed relatively uneventfully, though on occasion other students would, indeed, make fun of her to her face.
Her parents died shortly after she completed her schooling at Hogwarts. She spent many years after that traveling England, attempting to make a living with her “gift” before coming to Professor Dumbledore in 1979 in search of a teaching position at the school.
Brief Roleplay Sample:
(No shorter than 200 words, no more than 400 words)
It would be a lie to say I was surprised, Sibyll Trelawney thought as she stared contemplatively at the card on the table before her. The shiny surface of the card reflected her bug-like eyes as she remained transfixed on it.
A man, hanging upside down from a tree, by his ankle. Only, as she was looking at him, he was right-side up, looking like some odd sort of flamingo. The Hanged Man.
Inverted, Sibyll knew, the card represented loss, lack of commitment. A preoccupation with selfish and material things, a preference for the status quo. Apathy in pursuit of goals.
Oppression.
Evil was rising in the Wizarding world yet again. An unseen, unknown, unspeakable evil that had the power to single-handedly destroy all that the Wizarding world in general held dear, all they had fought for against Voldemort so many years ago.
Sibyll Trelawney had learned quite a bit about herself and her Sight in the time following the great battle at Hogwarts. She had learned to accept that she was simply not a naturally gifted Seer as her ancestor had once been. But she had also learned that one could nonetheless learn to be an effective Seer…and she’d spent much time doing just that (though she still had quite a penchant for gloomy predictions).
The worst part of her reading she didn’t want to admit.
This evil lived close to home.
There was a traitor at Hogwarts.
