Personality:
Alex is the smart, intellectual type. He isn't much for playing Quidditch or things of that nature, although he wouldn't mind a few games of Exploding Snap or wizard chess. He likes to spend more of his time in the library, mostly studying spells he hasn't learned yet, but he doesn't mind socializing either, although most people see him as a nerd and avoid him.
Alex is kind to others, including the younger kids that are mostly pushed around by the older kids, and sticks up for them against bullies. Most people think Alex is another pushover because of his nerdy habits, but in actuality, he is always ready to stand up for what he believes in. If someone tries to push him around, he will have his vengeance. However, he isn't so stupid about it as to just fire off spells in the hallways. He likes to think up clever ways to get people back without getting caught.
As for his relationships with girls... well, he hasn't really had any yet. He is quite shy around girls and hasn't had the courage to try to get a girlfriend. Still, he hopes that one day he will find the right girl and he will have the courage to ask her out. Whether this is a forlorn hope or not remains to be seen.

Family History:
Although the Newtons are not very well known in the wizarding world, they have been around for a very long time. They are actually one of the older pureblood families around, although they don't make a big deal about it. They were all brought up to believe that muggle-borns are not inferior to purebloods and they should be treated just like everyone else.
Alex's father, Lance Newton, and mother, Ophelia Newton, attended Hogwarts at the same time as the famous Harry Potter, though they didn't really know him personally. However, they were among the Ravenclaws that tried to convince the others that he was a good person and that they shouldn't believe any of the bad things that were being said about him. After they finished school, they both began work at the Ministry of Magic. Lance became an Auror and Ophelia became a member of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
When Alex was born, the two focused less on their work and paid attention to Alex. However, when they realized that their performance was suffering because of it, Ophelia quit her job and stayed at home with Alex. Lance would get home late sometimes, but he would always be ready to play with Alex, no matter how tiring his day was. By the time Alex was 5, he was already very fond of reading and would read books in the family's extensive library. Since Lance was the only child of his generation of the Newton family, they stayed in the Newton Mansion. They were thrilled when Alex started exhibiting signs of being a wizard and waited anxiously for the day that his Hogwarts letter would arrive. He would have to carry on the family legacy, after all.
Alex is just starting his fourth year at Hogwarts and is excited to get back to learning. He loves his parents and all, but Hogwarts is a second home to him. It is a place filled with mystery and wonder even after three years.
Brief Roleplay Sample:
Alex was smiling as he walked back to the Ravenclaw common room. He had been in the library all day and learned a few new spells that he couldn't wait to try out. It was amazing that even after he had spent so much time in the library, there was still so much more that he could learn there. The amount of knowledge stored in that room seemed to be endless. He was pondering this bemusedly as he turned a corner to find three fifth-years messing with a crying first-year girl.
These types of people sickened Alex to his core. It was all he could do to stop himself from cursing them right then. It appeared as if they had stolen her necklace and were tossing it around, tormenting her. Luckily, they hadn't noticed Alex yet. He quickly pulled out his wand and cast a Concealment Charm over himself. He found that people became a lot more frightened when they couldn't tell who it was that was attacking them. As soon as the Concealment Charm had hidden him from their sight, he pointed his wand at the bully that was currently holding the girl's necklace. "Rictusempra!", Alex whispered as a jet of silver light shot out of his wand and hit the bully in the chest.
The bully doubled up and dropped the girl's necklace immediately after he was hit. The girl just looked puzzled, while the other two bullies looked scared and searched desperately for the one that cast the spell that had hit their friend. Alex pointed his wand at the bigger of the remaining two and whispered, "Petrificus Totalus!", before doing the same to the other. As the spells hit their targets, their bodies became rigid and they fell to the floor.
The girl looked frightened now too as she hurriedly picked up the necklace that the bully had dropped. She looked around the corridor to make sure that nothing was flying at her, then kicked the first bully in the stomach and ran off. With a wide grin, Alex turned back the way he came and took a different route back to the Ravenclaw common room. Hogwarts sure was an interesting place.
